Our Young Dem of the Week for the week of April 18, 2018, is Shyla Clinton. Shyla, 19, recently graduated from Teton High School and has an associates degree in Social Science from BSU. She is the Campaign Manager Assistant and Diversity Director at Aaron Swisher for Congress. Shyla is currently pursuing a Media Arts degree at Boise State University.

Question 1: What made you want to get involved in politics? What was your first political experience like?
Shyla: I was always very vocal and independent as a kid. I loved all my history and government classes. Wanting to make a difference, I participated in Girls State as a junior in high school. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the experience, and it sparked a flame for local and state politics.

Question 2: What is one thing you were surprised to learn when you first got involved?
Shyla: I was surprised to see how many people are involved and how much time and effort they put into making society a better place.

Question 3: Who is/was your greatest political inspiration? Why?
Shyla: My greatest political inspiration is Teddy Roosevelt. He cared for our national resources and created national parks. His wisdom and sheer influence inspire me to keep going.

Question 4: What words of wisdom would you give to other young people?
Shyla: I’m still young, but what I can say is: never care what other people say, no one knows what you are doing, do you!

Question 5: What issues are you most passionate about?
Shyla: Equality is the biggest issue for me, and I am also passionate about child and domestic abuse.

Question 6: What would you like to see happen in Idaho politics this year?
Shyla: I would like Idahoans to unite and push past party lines and vote base off the platform and the person, not the party affiliation. Thank you for this opportunity and I hope that we can all fight for a better Idaho and a better America!
