Our Young Dem of the Week for the week of February 6, 2018, is Idaho Young Democrats National Committeeman Dylan Simpson. Dylan is 22 years old and from Hailey, Idaho. He graduated from Boise State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, along with a minor in history. Over the summer of 2016, and through the 2016 elections, Dylan was a Fellow for the Hillary Clinton campaign in Idaho. In 2017, Dylan was a field organizer for the Idaho Democratic Party’s Summer of Resistance program. In October and November of 2017, he was a field organizer for Ralph Northam and the Coordinated Democratic Campaign in Virginia.
Question 1: What made you want to get involved in politics? What was your first political experience like?
Dylan: While I have always been interested in politics, that interest initiated after Barack Obama won his election in 2008. I first got involved in politics in 2015 as an intern in the Idaho State Senate. That was an exciting experience as it pushed me to get better at research and debate, while also solidifying my interest in politics.
Question 2: What is one thing you were surprised to learn when you first got involved?
Dylan: The multitudes of reasons that people get involved in politics in the first place fascinates me. It’s cool to see someone involved because of something that happened to them, and them wanting to help people in the future.
Question 3: Who is/was your greatest political inspiration? Why?
Dylan: I am a huge fan of President Barack Obama. He was not only an inspiration for me, but for millions of Americans all around the country. He made me want to get involved. He went through great trials and still got a lot of good accomplished, despite all the resistance pushing back against him. That is inspiring!
Question 4: What words of wisdom would you give to young people?
Dylan: Keep on keepin’ on. Politics is not easy, but it is be rewarding!
Question 5: What issues are you most passionate about?
Dylan: Fighting climate change, and tackling the student loan problem that we are facing as a country. These are two major issues that impact our generation, young people, the most.
Question 6: What would you like to see happen in Idaho politics this year?
Dylan: Getting some of the loonier Republicans out of office, fighting to expand Medicaid, and bringing some semblance of sanity back to the government of our state.
