Each week, we nominate a Young Dem in Idaho for our weekly spotlight. Our goal is to increase involvement and highlight the hard work of amazing Young Dems in our state. To nominate someone for Young Dem of the Week, please email us at email@example.com.
Our Young Dem of the Week for the week of January 15, 2018, is Idaho Young Democrats Parliamentarian Matthew Wolfe. Matt is an East Coast transplant living in Boise. At 32 years old, he is employed full time as a Tax Attorney. His current political involvement is his work with the Young Democrats, however, Matt hopes to become more involved during this election cycle.
Question 1: What made you want to get involved in politics? What was your first political experience like?
Matt: Two things really drove my interest in getting involved: (1) Trump, and (2) Jimmy Fallon.
1) Trump: I probably do not have to explain this one.
2) Jimmy Fallon: I random caught Jimmy Fallon one night, and the musical guest were; The Roots, Busta Rhymes, and Joell Ortiz. They were signing “My Shot” from the Hamilton Mixtape (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sk8Ralp8w8). I initially hated the song, but wound up buying the album on iTunes, and listening to it none stop. The album is so motivating and really made realize that I did not want to waste my shot either. (I HIGHLY recommend that everyone listen to the album).
Question 2: What is one thing you were surprised to learn when you first got involved?
Matt: I was surprised to learn how many young people are already involved in politics here.
Question 3: Who is/was your greatest political inspiration? Why?
Matt: Right now I would say, President Obama. He was raised by a single mother, put himself through college and law school, then was a first-term senator that became president. It shows that you do not need to be born into a wealthy or powerful family to make an impact.
Question 4: What words of wisdom would you give to young people?
Matt: Read Fox News… seriously. It is so easy for people to only read the news that aligns with their beliefs, making it impossible to see two sides to any story. There is no shame in reading news put out by both sides of the aisle, and OCCASIONALLY, agreeing with them.
Question 5: What issues are you most passionate about?
Matt: I believe that everyone should have access to free healthcare and a free higher education.
Question 6: What would you like to see happen in Idaho politics this year?
Matt: I want a politician that realizes we are falling behind in education and will do what is necessary to turn things around. I would also like someone to address the infrastructure problem currently plaguing the state.
Question 7: Are there any other comments you would like to make:
Matt: I am honored to be on the board of the Young Democrats. I look forward to a great election year.
